Frequently Asked Questions

Outbound Students

1. Why go on exchange?

There is no better way to travel, live in another country, experience a different culture, make friends from around the world, perhaps even change your life, while adding to your degree back home, than to go as an exchange student.

In terms of value addition to your academics, you will get the opportunity to study courses that you would not be able to do at home.

It would also provide a good indication of your initiative to potential employers.

2. Who can go?

You must be an enrolled full-time student and attending classes in the semester at IMT before you can apply for a student exchange programme.

If you have completed two tri-semesters by the time you go on exchange and your grades are acceptable, along with other extracurricular activities, you are eligible for the selection process. The Chairman, International Relations along with the members of the International Relationship Committee will conduct interviews to select candidates for the student exchange programme. While you are on exchange you must abide by the rules of your visa, the visiting country and of the institution. Be aware that if you end up only enjoying the good life and not attending classes you can be barred from classes and sent home!

3. When to go and for how long?

approve an exchange in your final year.

The maximum time for exchange is one year. You can go for one semester and then extend if you wish but you must get approval from both IMT and the host institution.

It is good to start planning your exchange 6-12 months in advance. You will need to have enough money to live and hopefully travel as well.

4. What are the costs?

Fees - When you go on exchange to a partner institution you pay no extra tuition fees to the partner institution. However, some institutions may require separate payments for the membership of a Student Association or other such fees. These are usually fairly modest fees.

Living expenses, airfares, accommodation and meals, travel, insurance, textbooks and personal expenses will have to be borne by the students. Generally, the money required for a 6-month/one semester exchange will be around Rs. 3 lakh. For some countries this is way too much and for others probably about right. This might depend on the host country that one is travelling to.

Some partner institutions might make generous offers of their own scholarships to IMT students including free accommodation or stipends. These can change from year to year and you should keep an eye on these scholarships.

5. Where to go on exchange? What to study?

There are lots of opportunities for student exchange. Check out the ever-growing list and links to each institutions for the student exchange in the IMT website.

You need to spend some time doing research yourself and speak to any of the members in the International Relationship Office in the Academic Block at IMT about requirements to be kept in mind and to know the list of the courses that can be taken up.

6. Can I work part-time when on exchange?

That depends on a few factors. Firstly, your visiting country may have laws which dictate teenagers working. Secondly, you’ll need to take into consideration your responsibilities at the B-school. Thirdly, the terms of the student visa are of great significance when it comes to working part-time. The aim of the exchange is to experience life as a student overseas and to benefit from the experience as well as contribute to the host B-school. If part-time work prevents you from achieving these aims then it is not such a good idea.
